Another part of the activities is about the elements of art. I had to learn about the elements of art and what they are. The elements of art are line, shape, form, space, colour, value and texture. An element of art in this artwork is line. The lines in this picture are wavy and they are colourful and add detail to this picture.
As one of the starter activities for the summer learning journey I had to colour a picture from Art Colouring Book. I have chose these colours for the artwork because I wanted the flowers to be bright and stand out more in the painting.

West Coast Cycle Trail
On Tuesday 22nd of September, room 8 went to Milltown for a bike ride. We did this because it is a part of the William Pike challenge. We were going from Milltown to Kapitea reservoir on the Wilderness Trail. On the way there I went in the van with a few other people, and I sat with Wairini, Summer and Billie.
When we got there we unloaded all the bikes and gathered together. We started biking. Most of the time I was biking with Wairini. The first stop was when we got to cowboys paradise. At cowboys there was a guy that threatened some boys for skidding even though they were told not to. At each stop I would have something to drink and maybe a snack.
We stopped again just before the swing bridge and after the swing bridge. Going over the swing bridge was fun, because it felt cool and I liked looking down at the water. We kept biking until we got to the cars which was where we had lunch. For lunch I sat in the horse float with Billie H, Wairini and a few others.
After lunch it was fun because there was a lot of down hill. It was also boring because there was also a lot of flat. When we had finished the second stage people started to pull out. The last stage people weren’t going as fast and I heard a few saying are we there yet. When we did finish it felt so good to get off my bike. We waited for the last people to finish and then the bikes got loaded up and we drove back to school.
What Now
At 5:45 on Sunday morning I was being woken up by my dad because I was going to be on the What Now Show at Shantytown. I was really excited to play games and get foamed on the show. My brother and I were getting picked up by Amanda Hannahs mum and we were also taking Mylah. They wouldn’t let anyone in the gates before 7:00am and after 7:15am.
Once we were in we waited at the train station for the What Now crew. When Erin (A Presenter) and her crew Morgan (A director), Matt (A cameraman) and another Matt ( Who did props) came to the train station they introduced themselves and told us about what was going to happen that day. The first thing we did was go on the train and Erin introduced on TV that she was in Shantytown with students from Karoro school.
We finished that and had only a few minutes to get to where we were going to live next. Everytime we finished a cut Erin would get into a different dress. Then she asked Billie W, Olive, Indi and Seth what they liked about the West Coast and we sang happy birthday to Lily because it was her birthday. The crew chose 5 students to play Say It Don’t Spray It outside the fire station.
Say It Don’t Spray It is a tongue twister game and if you don’t say the tongue twister properly you get foamed. The people that were chosen were Emma, Jordyn, Mea, Lucy and Zade. Jordyn was out first then Lucy, then Zade and then Mea. Emma won the game and won bottles of gunge and a ball but she still got foamed. It was really funny watching people get foamed.
Next we went gold panning. I didn’t get any gold but Jack T and a few other people did and they were allowed to keep it. Morgan told us to go to the movie theater next and we had to do some acting. He told us to go in really excited and then come out disappointed and angry. We didn’t see it but they played a movie with really bad acting that they made the day before.
Now it was the part everyone was waiting for apart from Mrs Newton, it was time for her to get gunged. Erin asked her questions that were about Māori words. When she got a question correct we got foamed but when she got one wrong we got to throw a ball at a target and it hopefully hit and the gunge will fall on her. Mrs Newton got the first three questions correct and then she got one wrong and Ilish hit the target and Mrs Newton got gunged.
The last part was the funnest Erin foamed everyone and there was foam everywhere, people were rolling on the ground in the foam making foam angles. While the kids were having fun with the foam the adults and teachers that were there were busy getting the bags out of the church so we didn’t make a mess.
I thought that being on the What Now show was super fun but I wish that there were more games so that more people could join in and be on camera more.
For te wiki o te maori we were learning about what whakatauki is. A saying and the saying we were doing was Mauria te pono/believe in yourself. Here is my work I did with Indi and Olive about our whakatauki.

Today I read a short novel, it was called Dunger. It was about a boy and girl called William and Melissa, they are siblings. My favourite part of the book was when they found out that they weren’t going to Queenstown and found out that they were going to their grandparents bach, and also when they found out at the bach they had to help their grandparents clean and repair. My favourite thing about the book was that it had some humour in it.
Lake Daniell
On Wednesday the 9th of September Room 8, Ms Kemp and 10 parents went on a spring tramp to Lake Daniell for the William Pike Challenge. Lake Daniell is in Lewis Pass on the Southern Alps. As preparation for the tramp we learnt about the dangers of the beech forest, hypothermia, and “Leave No Trace”. Leave No trace means plan ahead and prepare, travel and camp on durable ground, pick up your rubbish, leave what you find, minimise the effect of fires, respect the environment and animals in it, and be considerate of others.
We first had to come to school and check we had the correct gear for tramping. Then we got into our car groups; my car group was Wairini, Summer, Rachel (Summer’s Mum) and I. When we got to the Marble Hill Camping Ground my classmates and I got together and then we started walking. At first when I was walking I was talking with Billie H and Wairini, but after the first stop I walked with Indi and Olive and talked with them. The walk is mostly flat but it has a few small hills. At the lake was the Kōhanga Atawhai-Manson Hut.
The first thing that I did when I got to the lake was go and look inside the new hut with Indi, Olive, Summer and Wairini. The hut had a big chalkboard wall that was filed with peoples names and I found a spot to put mine. We went and looked inside the rooms with the bunks and then went and signed the hut book. I went and had some lunch and then went on the jetty to look at the lake.
On the way back from the lake I went at the front with Indi and Hamish for 30 minutes then we stopped for people to catch up and after that stop I walked the rest of the way by myself because I was walking fast but not as fast as the people at the front.
When I had finished there were people finished already and they had found a rope swing and I was watching but didn’t go on it because I was too tired. After everyone had finished the walk we had a talk and then we drove home.
I thought that the tramp was really fun and I really enjoyed walking and laughing with my friends and also looking at the new hut with them too.
Today I read three fiction articles from a school journal. My favourite one was called Sniffer Dog, it was about a dog called Isaak that works at the airport. He is a detector dog, that means he goes through the airport sniffing the bags and trying to find things like fruit and plant material. The book also said that Isaak is a beagle and beagles are good for this job because they have an excellent sense of smell and are small, friendly dogs.
Today I had to read at least three non-fiction articles/stories in a school journal. My favourite story that I read was called The Plum Tree. It was about a group of kids that are scared of a lady that lived on the corner of their street and they called the lady a witch. She had a plum tree and the kids would have competitions on who could get the most plums before getting yelled at. It was two of the girls' turn and they were in the tree and the lady came out, the lady let them carve their names into the tree, the lady said it reminded her of her mokopuna and asked them to get some plums for her. Ever since then the girls are allowed to go up whenever but not their friends.
Our class has been learning about simple machines. Before we started learning about
them I thought that a simple machine was something like a remote controlled car. But after
learning about them I know there are 6 simple machines. They are a lever, a screw, a wedge
, a wheel and axle, a pulley and a inclined plane.

Today I had to read the lyrics from 3 songs the song lyrics that I read were the lyrics to, Blinding Lights By The Weekend, Dance Monkey by Tones and I and Don’t Start Now Dua Lipa. My favourite one to read was Dance Monkey because it was easy to read and it has a good beat.
I had to read 3 articles from this magazine. My favourite one was called How Do Scientists Tell The Age Of Fish? They can tell how old a fish is by looking at the little bone in a fish's ear. The bone grows when the fish grows. The bone has rings on it because a thin layer of bone is added everyday. They said because the daily rings can become really blurry so they look for the layers of thick summer rings and thin winter rings.
Today I had to read a graphic novel. My favourite part of the novel was when the little girl the size of a thumb called thumbelina was trying to find her way home because she had just escaped toads that were trying to get her to marry their son. It was my favourite part because on the way all sorts of animals were helping her because the toads were mean to them too.
