Whakatauki

 For te wiki o te maori we were learning about what whakatauki is. A saying and the saying we were doing was Mauria te pono/believe in yourself. Here is my work I did with Indi and Olive about our whakatauki.

Te Reo Maori Work

Whatumoana

Whatumoana means bravery, I think bravery is important because I think if you are brave you can do more things and enjoy what you are doing more. When you are brave you are courageous you have the courage to do things that people that aren't brave won't do. To be brave sometimes means that you have to go outside your comfort zone and going outside your comfort zone is a good thing. Bravery can get you through things like if you are really sick you have to be brave and fight your illness.

Some people that I think are brave are the people that fought in the wars. To fight in the war you have to be very courageous because you are fighting and risking your life for other people. I also think people like police officers, fire fighters, paramedics, doctors, etc are brave because they are in different ways saving peoples lives and some of them are risking there lives too.

Kowhaiwhai Art

In He Kākano this term, we have been learning about different kowhaiwhai
patterns and their meaning. First we had to do some practise patterns and
when we felt confident we started drawing some ideas. It took us a while to
figure out whatwe wanted to do but after quite a few sessions we came up
with our pattern. 

The meaning behind our pattern is that the koru symbolizes friendship this
includes the red koru heart. The white shapes symbolize abundance. The meaning
behind thissymbol in Māori means a large quantity of something. So overall our
pattern means a large quantity of friendship and love. We chose the colours red,
white, black and green because we wanted to keep the colours close to the original
colours that were mainly used in Māori art.

Maori Phrase Of The Week

We are learning to say simple maori phrases. This week the maori phrases are: 

                         He kuri tāku mokai- My pet is a dog.  

      
                                     He ngeru tāku mokai.

He Kākano

In He Kākano this term we have been learning how to give basic directions in Māori. Here is my work that I did with Mackenzie and Dakota.

The Noho Marae

The Noho Marae

On Tuesday the 6th of March the yr 7’s and 8’s went to the Arahura marae, it was lots of fun.

First was the powhiri; we waited at the gate for the tangata whenua to open the gates and the
karanga to start. As they were doing the karanga we slowly walked onto the marae. When we
made it to the marae we let the boys take their shoes off before the girls. Then we go inside
the marae and the men did the whaikorero (speeches). When the whaikorero (speeches) were
done we went to the wharekai for morning tea. After the morning tea we shared our mihi and
Ms Kemp read us a book about Poutini and Waitaiki.  

Later in the day we went to the Arahura river to collect some pounamu (Green stone) anything
we find we can keep. Only five people found some pounamu and four of them were boys. Most
stones that I thought were pounamu (Green stone) were serpentine. Serpentine is pounamu
(Green stone) that just hadn’t been in the ground for as long.

From the river we walked down a track to the beach and had a sculptures building competition.
In my group were Charlie, Korban, Daniel, Summer and me. We built a waka. We had sticks poking
out of the ground for the sides. For the inside of the waka we put sticks for panels. We had two
massive logs for the front of the waka and the back of the waka. By then we had to go back so we
left the sculptures and went back to the marae.   

In conclusion, for me the marae visit was really fun. I would definitely go back to the marae. My
favourite part of the marae was the building of the sculptures because it was fun building it.

My Mihi

Learning my mihi was challenging but as I kept practising it got easier.

Treaty Of Waitangi

This year we did a little recap about Treaty of Waitangi. We learnt about the past NZ flags which are  United tribes, Union Jack, Tinorangatiratanga and New Zealand Flag. We also learnt about the great  fleets which was seven waka that came to NZ for the Treaty of Waitangi.
