Quick Writes Term 4

We have been working on ‘Quick Writes.’  This is where you are given something to write about (a writing prompt) and you only have 10 minutes to write as much as possible using this writing prompt.

For our writing prompts we will use either images or short videos.

1) Fireworks

Fireworks

As I walked to the surrounding of the firework display I  was thinking that I just knew that it was going to be amazing. As I got to the front It was time. They counted down from 5. "5, 4, 3, 2, 1," it sounded as if it was a gun  being shot. A massive explosion of colours shot up in the sky. It was as if a ball of fire was being shot up in the sky and exploded out with colours. I was right. It was amazing!

2)Tomato Pulp

IMG_1463.JPG
Tomato Pulp

People covered in red clumpy tomato pulp! Some people have goggles so that the tomato doesn’t get in their eyes. I hear squishing and splashing from the pulp and the juice. The smell is as rotten as the smell of feet and tomato pulp. I can see people slipping over constantly because of the tomato pulp. I can hear people moaning when the slip over.

3) Spider Man

Spider Man

As I walk into the streets of New York city I see Spider man in rainbow confetti. There is a parade going on behind him. I can smell petrol from the cars and buses. I can hear cars, buses and trains. I can smell kai from the food shops. I can hear people talking and the music playing behind Spiderman.

4) Stormy Day

Stormy Day

It was a stormy day and all I could see was grey clouds. I looked out the matapihi (Window) and I saw a flash of lightning. I heard the roar of thunder. I could hear the wind whistling. As I lay in bed I could start to smell all of the rain on the ground. I can smell the fishy mist from the ocean. What a miserable day.

IMG_1185.JPG

For the next two weeks we are going to work on ‘Quick Writes.’  This is where you are given something to write about (a writing prompt) and you only have 10mins to write as much as possible using this writing prompt.

For our writing prompts we will use either images or short videos.

The purpose of this is to practise writing fluently.

When we look at our writing prompt we will have about 10-15 mins to discuss it and brainstorm some ideas and vocabulary.

Our learning goals are to:
-write a description, using powerful words and phrases
-include some Te Reo Māori
-carefully check that our sentences make sense and have correct punctuation and spelling.

When we are writing we need to think about…

  1. What do I want my reader to see?
2) What do I want my reader to hear?
3) What do I want my reader to smell?
Tips:
-look closely at the picture or video
-think about the three key questions and the learning goals
-give yourself time to plan and write

The strong aroma coming from the honey was so sweet. The beekeeper calmly opened the frame and all the bees started buzzing. Then the beekeeper carefully put the frame back and it was silent again.

My Robot Rampage work

This term we have been learning how to write a narrative story. Here is my work.

Every weekend there was one job Louie hated doing: mowing the lawns. He’d much rather be building his latest robot invention in the shed. That was it! What if Louie could build a robot to mow the lawns.Do you have a dad that makes you do the the worst chores? Well I do. Mowing the lawns was the job Louie hated the most. So that night he found scissors, a blender, steak knives, a fan, an electric razor and a T.V. Louie worked all night and in the ata (morning) it was ready to try out. He grabbed the remote control and pressed the go button. “Ahhh it is so loud,” screamed Louie. The sounds from the electric razor and the blender are as loud as a train engine. Away the robot went mowing the lawns. Louie was so relaxed he fell asleep. Later that afternoon Louie woke up to his neighbours booing! He ran down the street and all he could see is plants and grass turned into mud and rākau (trees) chopped down. Then he noticed his robot he ran over to it and flicked the off switch. Louie takes the robot and goes to his garage and starts repairing all the parts. It takes a long time but he finally finishes. Once his keretao (robot) is fixed it goes back and cleans up all the mess and makes everyone’s mahinga kai (gardens) look whakaruiri (clean) and nice. Now it has turned into a money machine because all of the town wants the robot to mow the lawns every weekend which makes Louie rich. “That was hard work, I don’t think I will be making another robot ever again,” Commented Louie “Hey Louie next weekends chore is washing the dishes,” yelled Dad from the other side of house. “Nooooo,” shouted Louie. The end

Maui Ledends

As part Matariki we re-read the legends of Maui. We then retold a legend and created artwork. Below is Nevey and my artwork.

Maui’s Fish
Long, long ago Maui’s brothers said that they were going fishing so Maui said that he wanted to go with them but they said no. So that night Maui hid in his brothers waka, so that in the morning when he woke up he could go fishing  with his brothers. That morning the brothers set off on to the ocean but the brothers didn’t notice Maui until he jumped out of his hiding space. The brothers allowed Maui to fish with them but they didn’t let him use any bait so he got his grandfather’s magical jawbone and stabbed himself in the nose so that he could use the blood as bait so that the fish would eat it and the jawbone would hook into the mouth of the fish. Maui then caught something on his fishing line and Maui noticed that the fish was not just a normal fish it was something giant. So he tugged and tugged and then he pulled and pulled.  Maui knew he could pull it up and he wanted to prove to his brothers that he can fish and that he has the strength to pull what ever was down there up so he started to pull like he has never before and he felt something coming up but before he could guess what it was he had pulled up a giant stingray. Maui’s brothers were jealous that he pulled the stingray up so they started to stab the stingray. Now the stingray Maui pulled up is what we call the North Island and they called there waka the South Island and Stewart Island is known as the anchor.

Persuasive Writing Why We Should Have Pets

We have been having a go at writing a piece of persuasive writing. Here is my writing about why we should or shouldn't have pets.

Title
A Short Statement about the topic.
eg. ‘Rugby League Is A Great Sport’

I Stand Up For Pets

Overview/ Statement of position
A brief statement of your view about the topic.  What you believe or want to argue.
I strongly believe that people should have pets. Pets are good for guiding people with a disability like if they are blind or deaf. Pets are also good for comfort because they can keep you company if you are old or alone. Pets can be trained to do certain jobs like jobs at home or a rescue dog. Pets can detect if someone  has cancer or if they are going to have a fit.
Series of Arguments
Reasons
Your points supporting your view about the topic.  Your arguments to support your statement and information to support these arguments.

Remember
-argument
-supporting detail, reasons, examples

Firstly, Pets are good for guiding people with a disability like if they are blind or deaf. They guide them everywhere and they go and help them open and shut things. Guide dogs aren’t just good for guiding people with disability they also protect them.
Secondly, Pets are also good for comfort because they  can keep you company if you are old or alone. If you are old you don’t have anyone to keep you company because their kids have moved out. Animals are good to talk to because they don’t answer back.
Thirdly, Pets can be trained to do certain jobs like jobs at home or a rescue dog. Pets can be trained to be a police dog to sniff out bad guys and to sniff out drugs. Dogs can be a police dog, fire dog, rescue dog. Dogs can also be trained to do jobs around the house. Jobs like getting the morning paper, fetch specific things for you.
Finally, Pets can detect if someone  has cancer or if they are going to have a fit. Dogs can detect if you have a disease like cancer. When Dogs smell cancer in a person they normally keep sniffing for a while and then sit by them. Dogs can also detect when you are going to have a fit if you trick them they are smart and don’t fall for it.
Concluding statement
Summing it up.  A summary of your arguments and your view on the topic.

In Conclusion I strongly believe that people should have pets because pets are good for guiding people, to keep you company if you’re old or alone, pets can be trained to do specific jobs, and also pets can detect if someone has cancer. For these reasons I strongly believe people should have pets.

Persuasive Writing Why We Should Fix Our Field

We have been having a go at writing a piece of persuasive writing. Here is my piece of writing about why we should fix our field.

Title
A Short Statement about the topic.
eg. ‘Rugby League Is A Great Sport’

Fix Our Field

Overview/ Statement of position
A brief statement of your view about the topic.  What you believe or want to argue.
I truly believe that we need to fix our whīra(field)The whīra(field)is a big part of our school and we all enjoy the activities that we play on it, if the whīra(field)  is not fixed it will always be muddy and boggy, when the whīra(field) is out then some of the P.E equipment is not being used and goes to waste, and we need the field to do hākinakina(sport) trainings. For these reasons we need the whīra(field)  fixed.

Series of Arguments
Reasons
Your points supporting your view about the topic.  Your arguments to support your statement and information to support these arguments.

Remember
-argument
-supporting detail, reasons, examples

Firstly, the whīra(field) is a big part of our school and we need it to play games and do activities. Games and activities keep us fit and it is important to keep fit.

Secondly, if the whīra(field) is not fixed we will not be able to play on the playground and basketball court because they are too crowded .  With everyone together it is more likely for people to get injured.

Thirdly, if the whīra(field) is out then some of the P.E equipment is not being played with and it means it is a wastes of money. The equipment helps our skills get better.

Finally, we need the whīra(field) to do specific hākinakina(sport) trainings for tournaments like soccer tournaments, touch and rippa rugby tournaments. To do well in tournaments we need to practise and without the whīra(field) there is no place to practise.

Concluding statement
Summing it up.  A summary of your arguments and your view on the topic.

In Conclusion we need to fix the whīra(field) because we need to play games and activities, it would be too crowded to play on the playground and basketball courts, P.E equipment is going to waste, we need to do specific hākinakina (sport)  trainings for tournaments. For these reasons I strongly believe we need the whīra(field).
